Fight The System!

So, I’m conducting an assessment on a teenage girl. She comes in, wearing pajama pants and no shoes or socks. (Especially odd since it was a -12 degree day!) She came in for an assessment after she made threats to kill herself when her boyfriend broke up with her. She appeared rather moody and visibly odd. So, I went for the obvious angle. I said “Hmm, I see you have no footwear. Why is that?” She all the sudden got this look of conviction on her face, straitened up in her chair and quite loudly said “Socks and shoes are repression! Fight the system!!! Buck the norms!! Make your own standards!”

Well, I didn’t know exactly what to say to this. I knew laughing was out of the question so I went to the next assessment question “Have you ever heard voices or seen things others couldn’t see?”
