Group

So, on Tuesday nights I assist in running education/counseling groups for juveniles while their parents are in a parenting class. Everyone is court ordered to be there and no one is happy to be there.

Last Tuesday there was this one kid in particular who was being disruptive and obnoxious. In the middle of another kid talking he would sigh and say how bored he was. While I was talking he would rock back and forth and sing to himself, etc. I spent a lot of time redirecting the other kids to not yell at him or beat him. This boy was even beginning to rub me the wrong way. He was sarcastic and rude to everyone and made a smart ass comment after everyone spoke.

Then, in the middle of the session he stands up and yells "I don’t want to be here!" So, having officially had enough of this kid’s crap, I stood up and responded with, in my I’m gonna kill you tone "Well, guess what, NOBODY does, so what makes you so special that you feel you can disrupt the group and take attention from others?!”

He looks around, slowly sits down and says in the tone of a question “Because I’m Asian? Maybe? No? I’ll be quiet now.”
